Get to know linebacker: Ramsey Derbas

Q: Why did you want to play Huskie football?

A: I chose to play Huskie football because I felt it was a place where my personal values aligned with the programs culture. The coaches had a plan for me and I believed it was the best place for me to excel as a player, student and person.

Q: You had success in your first season in the Canada West winning rookie of the year, how do you hope to replicate that in upcoming seasons and what contributed to the success in 2019?

A: I don’t want to just replicate the success I had in 2019 but I want to be even better. I’ve worked hard this past off season to develop my body, as well as my mind, to achieve even greater success. Much of my success in 2019 was because the coaches allowed me to make mistakes and my teammates accepted me and gave me confidence to perform.

Q: What do you bring to the team - what is your style of play?

A: My style of play could be described as someone who brings energy, a good attitude and someone who has a knack to get to the football.

Q: Coach Flory has called you a leader in the defensive group. What type of leader are you and how do you motivate your teammates?

A: Being in a leadership role you can’t expect anything from your teammates that you aren’t doing yourself. I try to be all in and fully invested in whatever we are doing by paying attention to detail. By doing that you can hold others accountable to that same set of standards.

Q: COVID-19 has been a rollercoaster and unique situation for athletes. How have you dealt with the heartbreak of losing a season and how have you remained positive throughout the pandemic?

A: The impact of COVID-19 and not having a season was difficult to swallow. Although, our team did a great job in navigating through it. I remained positive by understanding this is still an opportunity and another year for myself and the team to develop before we return to play.

Q: What can we expect from the Huskies when play resumes in 2021?

A: On the defensive side of the ball in the 2021 season, you can expect a fast, physical, and selfless group of guys with great pursuit to the football.
